The education authority undertakes to provide and maintain places and systems of work which are, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to health.

Information, training and supervision will be provided to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health and safety of those who work within the education service, are in its care or visit its premises.

All members of staff within the service will be made aware of their individual responsibilities under section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and for those persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions, and to co-operate with the education authority in meeting its responsibilities.

Any member of staff or parent wishing to consult the complete set of advice and regulations will have access to the main school copy/disk.

Any unsafe conditions must be reported to the secretary or caretaker as appropriate. In addition, where safe, an attempt should be made to eliminate any danger before reporting it.

It is the duty of the Headteacher to ensure that the Framework of Health and Safety is carried out and that individuals understand that they should comply with the regulations.

The Framework will be reviewed annually in the Autumn Term by the Headteacher and the Pastoral Committee who will have an overall monitoring role. The Headteacher is responsible for reviewing and providing courses when and where appropriate.
In addition there will be regular risk assessments carried out by the Headteacher/caretaker/school safety representative.
Copies of risk assessments will be retained.

bullet

Properly stocked First Aid boxes will be found in the following places:

Downstairs Cloakroom

These boxes will be replenished from the store in the Medical Room by the Main First Aider.

In the case of an accident, immediate First Aid should be carried out and help summoned. Any further action should be taken by the most senior person.

AN AMBULANCE MUST BE CALLED FOR ANY SUSPECTED FRACTURE OR SERIOUS INCIDENT. FOLLOWING THIS THE PARENT SHOULD BE CONTACTED.

8      ILLNESS

Any child who appears to be ill should be sent or brought down to the Office. When there, s/he will normally remain under supervision unless the Headteacher or Office staff take the decision to send him/her home.

There is a list in the Office of the most common diseases and this will be referred to when deciding upon whether or not School Attendance will be appropriate or when the Parent body should be notified.

If further advice is needed, the secretary will contact the School Health Service or Environmental Health Department. The other school (Infant or Junior) will always be informed/consulted where further action needs to be taken.

In the case of a child being sick, the caretaker should be sent for and the vomit covered with sweeping powder. This will be found in

bullet

The caretakers room

bullet

Each classroom (under the sink)

(If the caretaker is not present another member of staff should cover the vomit and inform the office)

When a child appears to have head lice, a note should be sent out to all the class. These notes are available from the Office. If the situation persists, the school nurse will be contacted. A video is available to provide guidance to parents.

In the case of an Asthma attack, the child should have direct access to his/her inhaler and First Aid should be carried out. (See the Asthma Policy)

9     MEDICINES

Apart from inhalers, all medicine should be stored in the Office and children should be allowed to visit the Office at appropriate time so as to take their medicine.

No adult should administer medicine unless in exceptional circumstances and with special arrangement involving the Headteacher.

Parents are advised to keep children at home until a course of medication is finished.

Long term antibiotics should be administered by parents before school, at 3.30 pm and at bedtime.

No sun protection cream is applied (Please see Sun Protection Policy).

The use of Epi pens is only through arrangement involving the Headteacher. Photographs of children needing immediate treatment will be on display in the office, staffroom and First Aid room.

10      FIRE SAFETY

It is the duty of the caretaker to check fire alarms, fire fighting equipment and that fire doors are in good repair and kept clear.

All staff are responsible for keeping exits and passageways clear so as to allow for immediate evacuation if necessary.

FLOOR SPACE SHOULD NOT BE CLUTTERED WITH BAGS AND COATS

Good practice is to train children to be safety conscious.

Fire drills will be held twice a term, with one used as training and the other unannounced and varied.

Teachers will have particular responsibilities which will be outlined on the notice in the classroom. The Deputy (or replacement) will ensure that everyone has been evacuated from the Upper Floor and the Head (or replacement) will do the same for the Ground Floor. Registers will be collected by and returned to the secretarial staff in the playground.

All adults that work with children must be aware of the need to be seen to act appropriately at all times.

Everyone is responsible for their own security and that of their own belongings. Provision is made for staff valuables to be kept safe.

No act of violence on premises will be tolerated and any act of violence must be reported.

Violence includes physical and verbal aggression, racial or sexual harassment.

Those guilty of violence may be asked to leave the premises.

Staff should always report planned arrival and departure times. They should know parents in advance, if possible, and take a colleague if necessary. If there is likely to be a difficulty they should arrange for the parent to visit the school instead.

17      BANK RUNS

These should be at different times of the day and involve different people.

18      SAFE WORKING PRACTICE

Any handling should be carried out by the appropriate person in the appropriate manner using the appropriate equipment.
Training/information will be made available where necessary.

All adults working in the school will have their attention drawn to the fact that they must not work at height without the proper equipment and/or alone.

All adults working at a workstation for a significant period of time should undertake an annual workstation analysis with their Line Manager.

19      DEALING WITH STRESS

Wherever possible, staff should work in an environment where the level of stress is acceptable and is regularly monitored. The operation of the school as a collegiate body will help to combat stress related problems.

20      KITCHENS

Only personnel authorised by the catering firm or the school will be allowed in the kitchen.

Anyone using the kitchen must adhere to the rules laid down by the catering firm and Medway Council. It is the responsibility of the caretaker to be aware of these rules and report to the School Office any contravention.

21      SAFETY IN THE CURRICULUM

Each curriculum document contains guidelines for the safe delivery of the subject matter.

All teachers are responsible for the safety in their designated areas.

Any unsafe equipment or furniture etc should be rendered safe and the Office/Caretaker informed at once. S/he will contact the appropriate person.

All equipment should be stored safely and floor space should not be cluttered. A good housekeeping attitude should be encouraged.

Classroom rules, as laid out in the Behaviour Policy, should be observed.

Children must be supervised at all times.

Children should be trained in the safe use of equipment.

23      THE SAFE PLAYGROUND

The Behaviour Policy should be observed.

Supervision is provided at playtimes and lunchtimes.

Anyone noticing a hazard should report this to the Office/Caretaker.

In the case of an accident, First Aid procedure should apply.

Any harmful waste should be drawn to the attention of the caretaker. Particular care should be taken where bodily fluids are involved.

All cleaning materials and other potentially dangerous materials are stored securely. Medway Council regulations are followed.

25      THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY

Emphasis should be place on informing parents, visitors and children of the need to observe Road Safety rules around the school. Children will be regularly reminded of the need to walk straight home by the safest possible route.
Where appropriate, Barnsole will play a part in Medway Council initiatives aimed at Safe Journey to School.

26      SEVERE WEATHER

In the event of severe weather conditions during the winter months, parents will be recommended to listen to the local radio as information about the school being closed will be sent by this means. School will remain open except in the most severe conditions and there will always be staff on hand to help with any difficulties on the day of the closure. Children will be reminded to report to school and not turn back because they are told that the school is closed. A decision to close the school will be made by the most senior member of staff at the school and will follow LEA guidelines that the school should be open unless there is a lack of water, adequate heating, supervision, dining facilities or similar necessary provision. The Education Office will be informed immediately as well as the local radio using the procedure known to the Headteacher and Office Manager.
