This policy and its
operation will be kept up to date by an annual review.
2 RESPONSIBILITY
As part of Medway Council,
the education directorate is committed to its primary responsibility for
the health, safety and well being of all staff, whether on Medway
Council premises or carrying out the education authority's business
elsewhere. The directorate also recognises its responsibility for other
persons when they are within its premises or care.
The education authority
undertakes to provide and maintain places and systems of work which are,
so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to health.

Information, training and
supervision will be provided to ensure, as far as reasonably
practicable, the health and safety of those who work within the
education service, are in its care or visit its premises.
All members of staff within
the service will be made aware of their individual responsibilities
under section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to take
reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and for those
persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions, and to
co-operate with the education authority in meeting its responsibilities.
Any member of staff or
parent wishing to consult the complete set of advice and regulations
will have access to the main school copy/disk.
Any unsafe conditions must
be reported to the secretary or caretaker as appropriate. In addition,
where safe, an attempt should be made to eliminate any danger before
reporting it.
It is the duty of the
Headteacher to ensure that the Framework of Health and Safety is carried
out and that individuals understand that they should comply with the
regulations.
The Framework will be
reviewed annually in the Autumn Term by the Headteacher and the Pastoral
Committee who will have an overall monitoring role. The Headteacher is
responsible for reviewing and providing courses when and where
appropriate.
In addition there will be regular risk assessments carried out by the
Headteacher/caretaker/school safety representative.
Copies of risk assessments will be retained.

INFORMATION
The initial introduction of
the policy will take place at a formal staff meeting. Following this
there will be regular reminders and updating at staff meetings, SMT
meetings and the Pastoral Committee. Any urgent information will be
passed on to those who need to know, in the most appropriate manner at
the time.
All new staff will be introduced to the Health and Safety Policy as part
of their induction course.
Parents will be informed of
Health and Safety Practice through newsletters, the prospectus and at
appropriate meetings. Information will be disseminated on a need to know
basis. Official bodies will be consulted if necessary.
Supply teachers and students
will be made aware of good practice by the Lower/Upper School Leader,
but all Staff should be alert to any potential problems.

Responsibility for Areas
(If the caretaker is not
present another member of staff should cover the vomit and inform
the office)
When a child appears to have
head lice, a note should be sent out to all the class. These notes are
available from the Office. If the situation persists, the school nurse
will be contacted. A video is available to provide guidance to parents.
In the case of an Asthma
attack, the child should have direct access to his/her inhaler and First
Aid should be carried out. (See the Asthma Policy)

MEDICINES
Apart from inhalers, all
medicine should be stored in the Office and children should be allowed
to visit the Office at appropriate time so as to take their medicine.
No adult should administer
medicine unless in exceptional circumstances and with special
arrangement involving the Headteacher.
Parents are advised to keep
children at home until a course of medication is finished.
Long term antibiotics should
be administered by parents before school, at 3.30 pm and at bedtime.
No sun protection cream is
applied (Please see Sun Protection Policy).
The use of Epi pens is only
through arrangement involving the Headteacher. Photographs of children
needing immediate treatment will be on display in the office, staffroom
and First Aid room.

FIRE SAFETY
It is the duty of the
caretaker to check fire alarms, fire fighting equipment and that fire
doors are in good repair and kept clear.
All staff are responsible
for keeping exits and passageways clear so as to allow for immediate
evacuation if necessary.
FLOOR SPACE SHOULD NOT BE
CLUTTERED WITH BAGS AND COATS
Good practice is to train
children to be safety conscious.
Fire drills will be held
twice a term, with one used as training and the other unannounced and
varied.
Teachers will have
particular responsibilities which will be outlined on the notice in the
classroom. The Deputy (or replacement) will ensure that everyone has
been evacuated from the Upper Floor and the Head (or replacement) will
do the same for the Ground Floor. Registers will be collected by and
returned to the secretarial staff in the playground.

The Fire Brigade will check
all extinguishers every six months and the alarms are also checked
regularly. If any fire equipment has been used or may be deficient, it
is the responsibility of the caretaker to contact the Fire Brigade.

BOMB SCARES
Any bomb scares must be
treated seriously and as much information as possible should be noted.
Classes will be informed
verbally by the Head or Office Manager and should evacuate as if for a
fire.
After evacuation, the Office
Manager will contact the Police.

HOSTAGE POLICY
If a person is taken
hostage, the rest of the school should be evacuated as if for a bomb
scare, keeping well away from the danger area.
The police should be
contacted immediately and unobtrusively.
Any incident must be taken
seriously.

MOVEMENT BETWEEN SITES
No child will be allowed off
the school site unaccompanied. Children will walk across roads quietly
under the direction of the designated adult.

SECURITY
All adults coming on to the
site must first report to the Reception. The way in to the Junior School
is through the main door at the School Avenue end of the building. No
other routes of entry must be used.
All adults that work with
children must be aware of the need to be seen to act appropriately at
all times.
Everyone is responsible for
their own security and that of their own belongings. Provision is made
for staff valuables to be kept safe.

VIOLENCE
No act of violence on
premises will be tolerated and any act of violence must be reported.
Violence includes physical
and verbal aggression, racial or sexual harassment.
Those guilty of violence may
be asked to leave the premises.

HOME VISITS
Staff should always report
planned arrival and departure times. They should know parents in
advance, if possible, and take a colleague if necessary. If there is
likely to be a difficulty they should arrange for the parent to visit
the school instead.

BANK RUNS
These should be at different
times of the day and involve different people.

SAFE WORKING PRACTICE
Any handling should be
carried out by the appropriate person in the appropriate manner using
the appropriate equipment.
Training/information will be made available where necessary.
All adults working in the
school will have their attention drawn to the fact that they must not
work at height without the proper equipment and/or alone.
All adults working at a
workstation for a significant period of time should undertake an annual
workstation analysis with their Line Manager.

DEALING WITH STRESS
Wherever possible, staff
should work in an environment where the level of stress is acceptable
and is regularly monitored. The operation of the school as a collegiate
body will help to combat stress related problems.

KITCHENS
Only personnel authorised by
the catering firm or the school will be allowed in the kitchen.
Anyone using the kitchen
must adhere to the rules laid down by the catering firm and Medway
Council. It is the responsibility of the caretaker to be aware of these
rules and report to the School Office any contravention.

THE SAFE CLASSROOM
All teachers are responsible
for the safety in their designated areas.
Any unsafe equipment or
furniture etc should be rendered safe and the Office/Caretaker informed
at once. S/he will contact the appropriate person.
All equipment should be
stored safely and floor space should not be cluttered. A good
housekeeping attitude should be encouraged.
Classroom rules, as laid out
in the Behaviour Policy, should be observed.
Children must be supervised
at all times.
Children should be trained
in the safe use of equipment.

THE SAFE PLAYGROUND
The Behaviour Policy should
be observed.
Supervision is provided at
playtimes and lunchtimes.
Anyone noticing a hazard
should report this to the Office/Caretaker.
In the case of an accident,
First Aid procedure should apply.
Any equipment used in the
playground should be safe.
Only a designated adult
should be allowed on the roof. The state of the roof and its
construction should be taken into account.
Children's toilets will be
regularly supervised so as to ensure that they are a safe environment.

THE SAFE SITE
The Behaviour Policy should
be observed.
The caretaker and cleaners
are responsible for ensuring that no children have access to any
cleaning equipment.
The caretaker will carry out
a safety inspection weekly and report/repair any defects.
Everyone on premises is
responsible for being aware of and reporting immediate hazards. All
dangerous situations should be rendered safe where possible.
All trailing electrical
leads should be made safe. All electrical equipment is annually checked.
Any harmful waste should be
drawn to the attention of the caretaker. Particular care should be taken
where bodily fluids are involved.
All cleaning materials and
other potentially dangerous materials are stored securely. Medway
Council regulations are followed.

THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY
Emphasis should be place on
informing parents, visitors and children of the need to observe Road
Safety rules around the school. Children will be regularly reminded of
the need to walk straight home by the safest possible route.
Where appropriate, Barnsole will play a part in Medway Council
initiatives aimed at Safe Journey to School.

SEVERE WEATHER
In the event of severe
weather conditions during the winter months, parents will be recommended
to listen to the local radio as information about the school being
closed will be sent by this means. School will remain open except in the
most severe conditions and there will always be staff on hand to help
with any difficulties on the day of the closure. Children will be
reminded to report to school and not turn back because they are told
that the school is closed. A decision to close the school will be made
by the most senior member of staff at the school and will follow LEA
guidelines that the school should be open unless there is a lack of
water, adequate heating, supervision, dining facilities or similar
necessary provision. The Education Office will be informed immediately
as well as the local radio using the procedure known to the Headteacher
and Office Manager.
