ASSESSMENT-PRINCIPLES AND PURPOSES

Assessment, recording and reporting should:

bullet

offer pupils an opportunity to show what they know, understand and can do

bullet

help pupils to understand what they can do and what they need to develop

bullet

recognise that the NC does not encompass all learning

bullet

be based on a considered view of which learning should be assessed in each subject area of experience

bullet

relate to shared learning objectives

bullet

advance the learning process

bullet

enable teachers to plan learning more effectively

bullet

help parents to be involved in their children's progress

bullet

provide schools with information to evaluate work, set appropriate targets and contribute to school improvement

Assessment

bullet

All work is marked according to an agreed format which is based on Formative Assessment

bullet

Termly QCA type tests in the core subjects are analysed to aid planning

bullet

At the end of the year there are QCA tests in English and Maths

bullet

There is ongoing teacher assessment

bullet

Tables, mental maths and spellings are tested in line with other school policies (Homework, English, Maths)

bullet

Science tests will be used where appropriate

Recording

bullet

Core books will be kept in the Record Bank until the following Christmas. Year 6 books are kept until Easter

bullet

Subject leaders will select examples for the Subject Portfolio when the work is no longer needed

bullet

Results of annual tests are stored on Assessment Manager in the main office

bullet

Results of the termly tests are kept by the teachers

bullet

A file is kept in the Secretary's Office for letters and items related to behaviour issues

bullet

SEN files are kept by the SENCO in the SENCO's office

bullet

Lesson plans should be kept for the year in the teacher's file and will be monitored by the Headteacher. Annotation should be used to record significant change

Reporting

bullet

Books are made available at Parents' Evenings and on request once a month

bullet

Pupils' progress is reported at each Parents' Evening

bullet

Levels gained in annual tests are reported in the annual report

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT AND MARKING POLICY

WALT AND WILF

It is good practice to show the learning intentions or objectives in short term/lesson plans following the Shirley Clarke project undertaken by all schools in the EAZ (2000-2005) it is effective to share the learning intentions with the children.

"Research shows that children are (not only) more motivated and task oriented if they know the learning intention, but they are also better able to make decisions about how to go about the task".

This is written up for children as the WALT (we are learning to) and referred to throughout the lesson. Children, who are able to, write the WALT on their work. It can be written for them or printed on the worksheets. In some circumstances, once the children know the learning intention they can help the teacher to write the WALT. The WALT needs to be directly related to the learning intention, but worded to suit the children.

Once the WALT has been shared with the class, they will then need to know how the teacher is going to mark their work and this is the WILF (what I am looking for). This may be very similar to the WALT or it may break the WALT into several steps, but it should not introduce elements which are not part of the learning intention.

SELF EVALUATION

bullet

Give time at the end of the lesson for Self Evaluation of the task in the light of WALT/WILF

bullet

When marking the work, the teacher marks to the WILF and in many cases will only need the phrase "WILF achieved"

bullet

Other aspects of the work not related to the WILF will be commented on as appropriate

HIGHLIGHTED MARKING or CLOSING THE GAP

This is a separate strategy intended to move children's writing on to the next level. When marking, use a highlighter pen to park up to 3 good phrases, sentences or words which answer the WALT.

Where an improvement could be made, an asterisk is inserted and footnotes added. These can be a suggested addition, a directive or a question to aid extension. These are called closing the gap prompts (see "Unlocking Formative Assessment" p60).

Time must be given in the next lesson for children to close the gap.

TEACHER ASSESSMENT

bullet

All foundation subjects are assessed by teacher assessment. This results in a final comment on the report based on the end of KS2 descriptors

bullet

Teacher assessmetn should inform planning and lesson plans/medium term plans should be annotated accordingl.y. Major revisions should be built in for teh following year

bullet

Teaching files must be retained until the following Easter

AT THE START OF KEY STAGE 2

bullet

There is an agreed policy for which information should be received and by whom when children transfer up to KS2

This is being reviews for Summer 2007 and completed details will be added to this policy document

SELECTION TESTS

bullet

An early meeting will explain to parents how the selection procedure will work for the year. Following this they will decide whether or not to opt into the selection process

bullet

Pupils will be helped to become familiar with the process

bullet

It is vitally important that all exercise books, files etc are kept in immaculate condition so as to show the pupil's best product

bullet

The selection results and details of the procedure are confidential and information will be give out on a need to know basis

END OF KEY STAGE 2

bullet

The Year 6 leader has the responsibility for organising SATS and SATS preparation in conjunction with the Headteacher

bullet

The Office Staff have the responsibility of ensuring that results and information are passd on to the appropriate secondary schools

SEN REPORTS AND RECORD KEEPING

bullet

All children should participate in all assessments. Special arrangements can be made for adaptations to the test to suit particular needs. For Year 6 pupils the SATS guidelines should be followed. In other Year Groups special arrangements should be agreed with the Year Leader, Headteacher and SENCO.

PARENT CONSULTATIONS

Each term there is a Parents' Consultation Evening with a specific aim:

bullet

AUTUMN TERM
Parents have the opportunity to meet the new teacher and discuss any problems carried over from the previous year or experienced at the start of the new term

bullet

SPRING TERM
The teacher will comment on the pupil's progress and highlight targets to be achieved over the secon half of the year

bullet

SUMMER TERM
This meeting is held one week after the receipt of the Annual Report and it is this report that will be the focus of the discussion

Each teacher is asked to offer one late (6.00 - 8.30) and one early session (4.00 - 6.00) and to make appointments during these times.

The appointment will be for 10 minutes and teachers are expected to keep to the time limit as it will then cut down on waiting times so that the service we provide is efficient. Any parent wishing to have a longer discussion should be encouraged to make a further appointment at another date.

All parental consultations take place in the hall.

Additional meetings should be within the presence of another party for security reasons.

WRITING THE ANNUAL REPORT

bullet

Each summer, parents will be sent the Annual Report which summarises the pupil's progress through the academic year

bullet

Whilst the report has a common format, there will be slight differences in the copy sent out for pupils in Year 6 since this year marks the end of KS2 and there are specific requirements that need to be met

bullet

The report is reviews each yea and enough copies of this, along with a limited number of spares will be given out to teachers who are writing the report by hand
For those using IT a disk will be available before Half Term. There will be a completion date for teachers to send the finished reports to the Headteacher's Office. These will be checked, finalised and then sent out to parents. At the same time forms will be issued for an appointment for parents to discuss the report

bullet

FORMAT
Teachers are asked to write a summary of the pupil's progress in each area of the curriculum illustrating his/her achievements during that year and highlighting the next targets
In English and Maths, teachers will report the level achieved in QCA tests whilst in Science (apart from Y6) a teacher assessment will be given

bullet

PREPARING THE REPORT
It is useful to keep a page for each child in the class so that information and comments over the year can be gathered to help prepare for Parents' Evenings and written reports

bullet

WHEN THE REPORT IS WRITTEN
When the reports are checked, they will be corrected by the IT technician and sent out by the clerical staff. Hard copies and the disk must be place in the main file by the clerical staff

HEALTH AND SOCIAL REPORTS

bullet

Any confidential material should be give the the Headteacher for the confidential file

bullet

To be useful, records need to be available and up to date. Records are held either by the School Office or the SENCO. (Nowhere else!)

bullet

The class teacher will keep specific information that will be accessible on a day to day basis:
Reading record book
SEN file for the class
Teacher's green planning file

bullet

Parents have the right to see all official records kept on their children unless that record is marked confidential. (Please ask the Headteacher before doing this)
Teachers' own notes and files are for their use and information only (not for parents)

TRANSFER BETWEEN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

bullet

Teachers will be told as soon as possible when a pupil leaves for another school. All relevant records should be placed in the main file in the office. Any relevant SEN records should be passed on to the Headteacher. He will remove any unnecessary items. A Common Transfer form will be completed and the records posted on to the next school

bullet

When a pupil enters school, the secretary will send for the records immediately and on receipt, the folder will be placed in the Office and the class teacher notified. Any confidential materials will be placed in the confidential section kept in the office

bullet

The pupils' books will be sent to the new school
