Discipline and Welfare

"The school has very good procedures for promoting and monitoring good behaviour, which contribute very well to their learning and personal development"

(OFSTED INSPECTION 2000)

At Barnsole we want to make sure that all children are happy. They are most happy when learning how to do new things in a safe and secure environment. To achieve this they are not only learning subjects, but also how to play and behave well towards each other, their parents and all adults.

We therefore believe that good behaviour needs to be carefully developed and not left to chance. Children learn all things best if they are clear about what they are supposed to do and are consistently encouraged to behave appropriately.

We have a small number of rules with easy-to-follow rewards and consequences. These are called the Golden Rules and each year you will be sent a booklet to remind you how this works.

The rules are as follows:

bulletDo be gentle (Do not hurt anybody)
bulletDo be kind and helpful (Do not hurt other people's feelings)
bulletDo work hard (Do not waste your time or other people's time)
bulletDo look after property (Do not waste or damage things)
bulletDo listen to people (Do not interrupt)
bulletDo be honest (Do not cover up the truth)

Each year the children elect a School Council which aims to discuss and improve conditions. This involves everyone in the democratic way of making a positive contribution to School.

We have a Peer Mediation Service whereby children in Year 6 are trained to help others with their problems.

If children disobey the rules, then they are punished accordingly by being reprimanded and making amends for their behaviour. This will take a variety of forms aimed at directing the children towards a better way of conducting their life.

If the problem is serious then parents will be invited in and in very exceptional circumstances, exclusion will occur.

A full copy of our Behaviour Policy, Anti-Bullying Policy and Anti-Racist Policy is available in the Reception Area and gives more information about our approach.
