HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH READING
Some guidelines:
BEFORE THE CHILD STARTS TO READ THE BOOK
If the child hasn’t started the book, ask them to read the title
and the blurb and to predict what they think the book might be about.
If the child has started the book, ask them to retell the story so
far. Try to encourage them to give as much detail as possible.
WHILE THE CHILD IS READING
Correcting mistakes
If a child reads a word incorrectly, ask them to look at it again.
If a child is stuck on a word
Always encourage them to sound the word out, or use the sentence to
try and guess what it might be, before telling them.
Developing comprehension skills
Ask the child questions about the story while they are reading, i.e.
‘Why did he/she do that?’ ‘How would you have felt?’ ‘What do
you think is happening here?’ ‘What do you think will happen next?’
Predicting
If the child has read half a book get them to predict what might
happen before they read on
Words to practise.
Read over and make a note of words the child has to practise.
WHEN THE CHILD HAS FINISHED READING
Please write in the reading record book, giving the date, the pages
read and an encouraging comment.
Make a note of any words the child has struggled with.
Share your comments with the child.
Let the teacher know if the child is having any problems with their
